"Sully"

   A depiction by Chris "Silver" Smith '92 of the Lawrence Sullivan Ross Statue in front of the Academic Building on the Texas A&M University campus, College Station, Texas.

   The Sullivan Ross Statue is A&M's most-venerated object, holding a special place in the hearts of all Aggies. Young Corps of Cadets members have traditionally polished Sully for decades now, and passers-by frequently leave pennies at the statue's feet for good luck. The Aggies For Christ student Christian organization hold weekly devotionals directly adjacent to the statue Tuesday nights at 9:30. The Academic Building is depicted in this print in its pristine, original state with the white-painted wood windows which have since been replaced by the University Physical Plant with anodized black aluminum-framed windows in the early 1990s (despite objections by the Old Main Historic Preservation Society). The Academic Building and its crapemyrtle trees have framed the statue beautifully for decades, and this scene continues to be the psychological center of the A&M campus.
 
The Sully statue depicts Lawrence Sullivan Ross, a Confederate general during the Civil War, the 19th governor of Texas, and an early president of Texas A&M University.
